Sgwd Gwladys Waterfalls

Sgwd Gwladys, also known as Lady Falls, stands as a mesmerising 7-metre-high waterfall with a plunge pool along the river Afon Pyrddin. This enchanting cascade holds a special place in the hearts of visitors, as it is considered one of the most easily accessible waterfalls in the renowned Waterfall Country of South Wales.

The Journey to Sgwd Gwladys

Embarking on a journey to Sgwd Gwladys begins at the village trailhead in Pontneddfechan, where adventurers set forth to follow a leisurely 30-minute path along the scenic riverside Elidir valley trail. The walk entrance, located behind The Angel pub and restaurant, offers a fairly level path that is suitable for most visitors to enjoy, albeit occasionally muddy in certain sections.

Upon reaching the viewing area along a minor branch trail just before the river crossing, visitors are treated to a captivating glimpse of Sgwd Gwladys. Many choose to continue their exploration along the river by crossing the bridge and descending to the base of the deep falls on the opposite bank, losing themselves in the sheer beauty of the cascading waters and the outdoor world.

Looking for a more immersive experience?

For those looking to get into the water and the adrenaline flowing, we offer a canyoning trip swimming through the river and behind the waterfall. Another alternative is our family friendly gorge walking experience.

The Return Journey

The return journey offers an alternative route, with a trail on the opposite side of the river leading back to Pontneddfechan. However, this path presents a greater challenge, featuring steep sections and steps that may not be suitable for all visitors, particularly those with mobility concerns.

Further Adventures

For those seeking further adventure, the Elidir trail extends past several more enchanting waterfalls, offering plenty of opportunities for cold open water swimming in the mountain water, eventually reaching Pont Melin Fach. However, it's important to note that the terrain becomes increasingly steep and uneven after Sgwd Gwladys, requiring a greater degree of physical exertion and caution to ensure a safe trip.

From students to families to retirees, there are shops, parks, leisure venues and events for everyone, as well as the nearby coast. Join in with city life to the full, or relax with artisan food and drink in our green spaces or city arcades.

National Park

The Brecon Beacons National Park was established in 1957, to both conserve the living landscape and provide enjoyment to visitors. Geological forces laid down sedimentation and glaciers scooped out open valleys. Study and read more of the history after a walking day in Brecon Beacons National Park.

Elider Trail Walk

The Elider Trail is another path through waterfall country, which passes 4 waterfalls known as Sgwd Gwladys, Sgwd Einion Gam, Sgwd Uchaf Ddwil and Sgwd Isaf Ddwil. We offer a guided day walk which includes the Elider Trail and the famous Four Waterfall walk and do both tracks in one day, which will take about 6-8 hours.

When is the best time to visit the area?

We recommend visiting the area in autumn because the rain will make the river levels a little higher and the waterfalls are amazing to see after some rain falls. Do be careful though as the paths can get a bit slippy - however there are lots of rocks and stones on the paths to give you more grip.
